Floor tile and grouting Tutorial. Large format porcelain tile installed on Schluter Ditra Heat, start to finish. A leveling system was used to install the tile to reduce or eliminate lippage. Large format tile also should be installed with a larger sized notched trowel to help achieve the recommended coverage and transfer of thinset to the tile, back buttering the tile is also a good practice to use. I also give some useful information about grouting, these days with the many different types of grouts available, it is important to read the direction of the grout you intend to use to understand the specific steps for that grout.
The leveling System is a designed for the installation of all kinds of tiles from 12”x12” and larger. This system is a wedge type system. The bases are inserted around the corners of a tile and then the wedge is slid in to bring the tiles into plain. Once the tile has set the wedges can be removed with a rubber mallet hitting the bases in the direction of the grout lines, on floor they can simple be kicked with a foot if you like. The wedges are reusable and should be collected for use in future tile installations. All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area.
