Simone lives with his father in the Abruzzo countryside in the early 1980s , is 11 years old and has lost his mother. It is summer, and since most of his friends are on vacation, Simone spends time with Lorenza, a child two years older, and mostly with the imaginary figures created by his imagination. This fantasy, too externalized, forces his father to lock him in the house. But the boy does not give up and manages to escape in search of the "Match Man," the most remarkable of the creatures sprung from the child's mind.
Simone vive con il padre nella campagna abruzzese nei primi anni Ottanta , ha 11 anni ed ha perso la madre. È estate e, poiché la maggior parte dei suoi amici è in vacanza, Simone trascorre il tempo con Lorenza, una bambina di due anni più grande, e soprattutto con le figure immaginarie create dalla sua fantasia. Questa fantasia, troppo esteriorizzata, costringe il padre a chiuderlo in casa. Ma il ragazzo non si arrende e riesce a fuggire alla ricerca dell'"Uomo fiammifero", la più notevole tra le creature scaturite dalla mente del bambino.
