Although colon is the second deadliest and third most common cancer in the US, “If we can get you into a regular screening program with colonoscopies, we can actually prevent you from ever developing this cancer,” said Gastroenterologist Dr. Mahboob Alikhan.
While they are the gold standard, historically the colonoscopy has limitations. “There's only so much that we can see. Sometimes polyps are small. Sometimes they can be flat. Sometimes they can be depressed. And it's easy to miss those polyps,” said Dr. Alikhan.
Enter GI Genius. The new technology uses advanced visualization and AI software to highlight precancerous polyps in real-time. “It's an absolute game-changer,” said Dr. Alikhan. “To have an AI tool assist you so that you're not worried about your eyes getting tired or your eyes getting blurred, and it can help you identify these precancerous lesions, that just helps us do our job better, more consistently, and at the end of the day it helps our patients.”
One of the great advantages of a colonoscopy… “Is that not only are we able to go in there and find these precancerous regions, we're able to remove them at the same time,” said Dr. Alikhan. Gi Genius technology is used in all colonoscopies at Lee Health. A screening is recommended every 10 years once you turn 45. You can learn more by searching for colon cancer on leehealth.org.
