Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: I'm an intermediate guitar player who mostly likes Blues guitar, (it's probably my favorite style of guitar). I've learned the 12-bar blues and I know how to play two blues scales. I'm having trouble doing blues lead. A lot of lessons talk about "Call & Response." Can you consider making a lesson that explains how to basically develop Blues phrasing?
Christian - Vancouver, BC. CANADA

A: The call & answer principle is one of the most basic methods used for teaching improvisation. A singer, especially a blues singer, has a theme that carries their vocal line. And, as blues soloists, we can learn a lot from listening to their parts. So, if a singer makes a vocal statement, there will either be a repeating theme to their vocal statement, or the theme will have another answered statement following things up and leading the phrase into another direction. This is the essence of the call & response. So, in this lesson, we'll take a look at how guitarists can; begin forming their initial statements, then we'll look at starting to build repeating themes, and finally we'll work on answering those statements & themes which will eventually form the call & answer phrases.
