Manchester in Translation 2023 - Queering Translation
A panel discussion looking beyond issues of representation to ask what strategies might inform a translator's practice with regard to both contemporary and historic queer literature and the ethical implications of doing so.
Ari Heinrich (he/they) is a Professor of Chinese Literature and Media at the ANU. Ari is also known for their translations of queer Taiwanese novels such as Last Words from Montmartre, by Qiu Miaojin (New York Review Books, 2014), and The Membranes, by Chi Ta-wei (Columbia University Press, 2021).
Anton Hur (he/they) was born in Stockholm and currently resides in Seoul. A graduate of the Korean University College of Law and Seoul National University Graduate School, he works as a writer and translator and has won PEN translation grants transatlantically and was double-longlisted and shortlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize.
Layla Benitez-James (she/they) is a Black Queer translator, poet, writer and editor. They are a 2022/23 National Book Critics Circle Fellow and they received a 2022 NEA fellow in translation for Hija del camino by Lucía Asué Mbomío Rubio (a co-translation with Lawrence Schimel).
