Why is the hiring manager asking you the interview question, tell me about yourself?
REASON #1. The hiring manager will ask you the question, tell me about yourself because they want to quickly determine if you have the skills and passion for doing the job competently. If you give a weak answer and you don’t answer it in a certain way, the interview will get cut short.
REASON #2. They will ask you the question tell me about yourself because it gets you talking about something you should know a lot about… yourself!
You will be the most nervous at the start of your interview and giving you the chance to talk about yourself will help calm your nerves.
That is why I strongly recommend you practice answering this first interview question several times before your interview so it gets off to a positive start!

When you answer the interview question, tell me about yourself. If you are experienced, you should use my S.E.A.T. structure. S.E.A.T.
S.E.A.T. stands for:
• SKILLS
• EXPERIENCE
• ACHIEVEMENTS
• TYPE OF PERSON YOU ARE
• Begin your answer and quickly tell the hiring manager the best SKILLS you can bring to their company.
• Next, talk briefly about the EXPERIENCE you can bring to their team. Your experience should match the job description.
• Then, talk about any ACHIEVEMENTS you have gained from your work life. Telling the hiring manager about your workplace achievements will convince them you are a high-achiever.
• Finally, tell the hiring manager the TYPE OF PERSON you are and what you will do in the role to add value to their business.
So, when answering the question, tell me about yourself for experienced candidates, use the S.E.A.T structure (Skills, Experience, Achievements, Type of person you are). You can easily remember the S.E.A.T structure because you will be sitting down on a SEAT at your interview!
When answering the question Tell me about yourself for freshers or inexperienced candidates, you should still use the S.E.A.T structure, but instead, you will talk about:
• The SKILLS you have.
• Your EDUCATIONAL background.
• Your ACTIVITIES outside of work – but be careful which activities you talk about.
• The TYPE OF PERSON you are, and what you will do in the position once they hire you.
