Foam shower trays are aan option, however the sub floor to which the tray is installed has to be, flat, level and smooth to accommodate a foam tray and the tray still needs to be cut fitted or extended and modified to fit exactly into the space of the shower floor. Mud, or deck mud, or floating the shower floor has only one needed condition to be possible, and that is that the sub floor be stable. It has no importance how level flat and smooth the base for the mud is as long as it can support the floor. Obviously it still needs to be cleaned before the installation of the base.
