New details have emerged about the dead Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev's showdown with police and the call he made to his mother in the final moments of his life.
The pair got out of their vehicle and a shootout ensued after being spotted by a police officer on a suburban street in Watertown at about 12.30 a.m. Police backup arrived shortly after and the gunfire continued for some time with the fugitives throwing crude grenades.
Elder brother Tamerlan, then made a call to his mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva,
reportedly telling her, "The police, they have started shooting at us, they are chasing us." Then sobbing, he told her, "Mama, I love you," before ending the call.
He then moved toward police, shooting as he approached until running out of ammunition. Officers then tackled him to the ground, discovering an IED strapped to his body.
Investigators have not yet determined a clear motive for the April 15 bombings. The young men's mother maintains the pair were set up.
