Sonic The Hedgehog soundtrack Green Hill Zone song remixed on Yamaha DX7 DEXED VST plugin.

All music tracks produced using only the free VST plugin DEXED running in Reaper DAW, except for drums which use the free GM synth built into Windows (Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth licensed from Roland). It works pretty well in this context.

DEXED emulates the sound of the iconic Yamaha DX7 Synthesizer from 1983. This uses similar synthesis to the the Sega Genesis (Sega Megadrive in the UK) game console from the late 80s. The DX7 however produces more hi-fidelity sounds and this remix uses studio quality professional effects which give a much richer sound than the console could ever produce.

The Genesis produces sound using a Yamaha YM2612 FM synthesizer and a Texas Instruments SN76489 PSG; the latter is integrated with the Video Display Processor (VDP). The Z80 processor is primarily used to control both sound chips to produce stereo music and sound effects.

The YM2612, a.k.a. OPN2, is a six-channel sound chip developed by Yamaha. It belongs to Yamaha's OPN family of FM synthesis chips used in several game and computer systems.

The YM2612 has the following features:
Six monophonic FM channels (voices)
Four operators per channel
