The city of Astana, which today is called Nur-Sultan, was founded in 1830 as an outpost on the caravan route on the trade routes between Russia and Central Asia. At that time the city was called Akmolinsk and was part of the Russian Empire.
Over the next decades, Akmolinsk became the center of the region and prospered due to the expansion of agriculture, the growth of industry and the development of trade.
In 1961, Akmolinsk became the capital of the Akmola region in Kazakhstan, which was then part of the Soviet Union. During this period, the city began to actively develop, many new buildings and structures were built, and the construction of new residential areas was also launched.
In 1992, Kazakhstan gained independence and Akmolinsk became one of the largest cities in the country. In 1997, it was announced that the city was renamed to Astana, and it became the capital of the republic.
In 2019, the city was renamed Nur-Sultan in honor of the first President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev. Today Nur-Sultan is a modernist city with a high level of infrastructure development, many architectural sights and the largest economic and political center in Kazakhstan.
