Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, the director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, with my quarterly news update.

Thanks in large part to NIH-funded research, Americans today are living longer and healthier lives. With an annual budget of more than $40 billion, NIH is the largest single public funder of biomedical research in the world.

In this issue, the value of NIH-funded research is unquestioned when we read about the remarkable 50-year history of the NIDDK-funded Diabetes Research Centers and 40 years of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, which changed clinical practice in type 1 diabetes management and opened the door to numerous innovative research advances.

We also learn about new programs, such as the NIDDK-supported BRIDGES consortium. BRIDGES supports underrepresented ethnic minority post-doctoral scholars in advancing their careers and competing for federal research funding.

And we highlight important research advances, such as the new kidney atlas, which is a major breakthrough that provides the foundation for the discovery of new drugs to treat or prevent kidney disease.

I hope you enjoy these stories and more. With the rigorous research made possible by NIH’s long-term research investments, we are proud to help drive scientific breakthroughs, medical advances, and ultimately, the well-being of all people and our society as a whole.
