Maybe it’s best to start with a fan’s testimony when talking about Serious Klein: “Flow is 20 outta 10 / Visuals 20 outta 10,” said a commenter on last spring’s “Numero Uno” video. Obviously the remark of a zealot, but the kind of skills that Klein exhibits definitely live up to such praise. We invited the 30-year-old German ace to be part of DSCVR Artists To Watch 2022 for similar reasons: imagination, authority, and casual swag are part of the very seductive Klein package. From 2012’s ‘Serious Outlook,’ back when he was an underground sensation, to this year’s pulsing “Down,” now that he’s an impressive global newcomer with shoutouts from Alicia Keys and other bigwigs, Klein has trusted his musical instincts and moved towards a place of respect, not chasing chart hits, but crafting coolness each time he steps to the mic. “Where he thrives as a hyphy rapper with rare lyrical ability in tow,” said writer Evan Dale three years ago, “he equals and even further excels as an artist capable of slowing down his flow, switching up his demeanor, and pursuing his music at a more relaxed, introspective level.” Raised in Hannover and proud of his Ghanaian heritage, Klein has said that if you want to make the biggest dent possible with your records, it’s a must to spit in English. He does so with a flair for accenting powerful phrases. Check the provocative and arty visuals of 2018’s “Voodoo Money.” Check the heartfelt emotion in the powerhouse ode to the late dad he grew up without, “Lil Capo.” Check the agility he brought to the stage when we captured “Numero Uno” for ATW 2022. Seems like lots more people should know about Mr. Klein and his fierce outlook on life. Here’s hoping our performances help that cause.
