On June 6, 1944, 79 years ago, Allied Forces invaded Normandy, France by air and by sea. This was largest amphibious invasion in history and marked the launching of Operation Overlord to repel German forces from Western Europe. About 160,000 soldiers crossed the English Channel that day, but over 10,000 soldiers lost their lives on the beaches of Normandy.
In this video, Jared shows a reproduction of the front page of The Sacramento Bee newspaper published the evening of June 6, 1944. The Sacramento Bee included a story by Collie Small, a war reporter, who gave an eyewitness account that day.
Collie Small was on an aircraft piloted by First Lieutenant Garland Carl Oliver, who was from Sacramento. Lt. Oliver was part of the 391st Bombardment Group who provided aerial support prior to June 6th and also that day by bombing German gun emplacements.
