Confusing Commands May Have Led to FATAL Result
In an effort to raise awareness about the importance of better training for officers, this video delves into the tragic events of April 13, where 19-year-old Elmer Lopez-Castaneda was fatally shot by police in Newark. The incident, captured on body-worn cameras, unfolded around 4:45 p.m. when officers confronted Lopez-Castaneda, a suspect in an earlier armed carjacking. Although he initially complied with officers' commands, the situation escalated when he reached for what appeared to be a gun in his waistband. This "gun" was later identified as a full metal replica of a Beretta M9 pistol. In a matter of two seconds, Lopez-Castaneda was shot by multiple officers and was pronounced dead at the scene. The video also includes surveillance footage of the alleged carjacking and a related 911 call. Investigations by the California Department of Justice and Newark police detectives are currently underway.
