What makes a chordate a chordate? Humans belong to the phylum Chordata because human embryos begin their development with what's called a notochord. At some point, chordates also begin with dorsal nerve fit, pharyngeal slits, and a muscular tail. Some keep these features through to adulthood while others, like humans, lose them. And all vertebrates belong to this phylum, which means every reptile, fish, bird, amphibian, and mammal is a chordate too!
