The Songkran Water Festival, also known as the Thai New Year Festival, is an annual festival happening in Thailand usually from April 13 to 15 - in Pattaya from April 13 to 19. This cultural colorful event brings people together to splash each other with water, pay respects to their elders, and welcome the new year with joy and enthusiasm. In Pattaya people celebrate on the beach - girls are wearing swimsuits and bikinis - many people swim in the ocean too.
The real meaning behind the splashes is to symbolically wash off all misfortunes in the past year, thus welcoming the new year with a fresh start. The Meaning of the White Powder: This is another ritual to ward off evil spirits and to give protection to the wearer. Thai people normally mix a white powder with water and wipe it across your cheeks; leaving a white smear.
