Printing a big oyster for National Oyster Day 🦪 (August 5)
August 5th is National Oyster Day! This day recognizes the mollusk that is is considered a delicacy around the world. Oysters have been a delicacy in Sacramento since the California Gold Rush.
For today, Howard letterpress printed an image of an oyster, with a sailing ship in the background, from a woodcut from the Lewis Winter Collection. This rather large woodcut, compared to the other cuts in his collection, was hand carved by Lewis Winter (his name is even in the print) roughly 130 years ago. This was printed with Pantone 209 oil base ink using our Washington hand press.
