September 4th is National Newspaper Carrier Day! This day recognizes the dedicated newspaper carriers who deliver the news door to door, a job that has been on decline as newspapers shift to a more digital format. This day is also the anniversary of the hiring of the first newspaper carrier in the United States, when Benjamin Day was hired by the New York Sun on September 4, 1833.

For today, Howard shares his connection to the printing industry while printing one of our newly acquired cuts to our print shop. Howard substitute carrier for the Oakland Tribune when he was a teenager. The cut is a typical piece you would find in any newspaper as it lists the rates. This solid type metal piece states, “BY CARRIER 40 CENTS A MONTH MONTHLY.” This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.
