Are you looking for a way to help you understand “Parallel Key Modulation,” and all the things that come with it? This includes using scales and chords to control transitions, playing arpeggios in a modulation, and even playing a guitar solo across this technique.
If this is you, then you are going to love this lesson. In it, I’ll give you a series of exercises in “D” Major and “D” Minor. If you remain consistent with the ways I lay out for practice, your ear will make the parallel key transition easily.
Parallel Key Modulation is effective at creating counter-balance of emotional effects. If you determine that what you want is a way to compose a song off of the same root, but incorporate a different emotion, then this technique is perfect. Dusty Springfield’s, “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me,” applies this by starting off in “B Minor” but modulating to, “B Major.” The effect is awesome!
Similar to relative changes, Parallel Modulation is about shifting between major and minor keys. The main function is to change the mood of the song off of the same root. It’s easy to do and can be done with even simple chord changes.
