What does it mean to decolonise translation? What steps can a translator take to decolonise a text? Can translation itself be considered a colonising practice? As part of Manchester in Translation 2024, this panel will seek to answer these questions and more, and explore the difficulties surrounding decolonising translation. We will be joined by UCL Professor of Translation Studies Kathryn Bachelor, writer, editor, researcher and translator Dr Kavita Bhanot, and Meg Sears from language justice organisation Respond Crisis Translation.
