At Iwo Jima, the individual Marine typically carried either an M1 carbine or M1 Garand rifle and an M1911A1 . 45-caliber automatic pistol. Marine Corps units also were equipped with the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), Thompson submachine gun, flamethrowers, bazookas, and mortars.
