To replace the K-700 tractor developed at the Kirov Plant in the early 60s, in 1975 the plant offered a new model K-701. The new tractor was designed for another 300-horsepower Yaroslavl engine and was in fact a completely new machine. The design of the poles underwent a change: now their separation was not required to dismantle the intermediate driveshaft, and the base increased to 3 meters. Wider wheels were used, which led to a decrease in pressure on the soil.
A second fuel tank appeared. The design has been refined, the car has acquired a more modern look. At the initial stage, due to the fact that the Yaroslavl motor plant could not cope with a large number of orders for the 300-horsepower YAMZ-240B, since the same engine was used by Belaz and railwaymen. A 200-horsepower YaMZ-238NB from the previous model was put on the new Kirovets. This modification was named K-700A. Tractors K-701 and K-700A were produced in parallel for a long time, until the Yaroslavl plant mastered the necessary volumes of the new YAMZ-240B engine. Like everything new, the K-701 tractor, along with its design advantages, had a number of technical disadvantages, as well as low reliability. The totality of indicators of the technical level of the machine influenced the conclusion of the testers. "At this stage of production, suspend the production of tractors and eliminate the identified shortcomings."
As history has shown, having passed the stages of the formation of the machine, it was the K-701 that became the most massive and famous tractor in its class. They were bought not only by socialist countries, but also quite successfully exported to Australia, Italy, Germany, Canada and even the USA. The Kirovets K-701 tractor is a general purpose agricultural wheeled tractor of the 5th traction class. The tractor in the unit with agricultural machines is designed for plowing, cultivation, harrowing, sowing, stubble peeling, tillage-free tillage and transport work. Retrofitting the tractor with a reverse gear, a power take-off shaft, a hodoumenshitel - allows it to be used also in road construction, land reclamation and earthmoving works, which significantly increases the annual employment of the tractor and the economic efficiency of its use in agriculture.
A four-stroke 12-cylinder v-shaped diesel YAMZ-240B is installed on the front half frame of the tractor. The engine is started by an electric starter. The power transmission consists of a semi-rigid coupling with a pump drive gearbox, gearbox, front and rear axles and cardan shafts. The transmission is a 16-speed manual transmission, with a hydraulic gearshift. Both tractor axles are driving, the rear axle is switchable. Tractor cab with heating and ventilation, equipped with a driver's seat, as well as an additional seat. The tractor has a separate-aggregate hydraulic system, a 3-point attachment.
To facilitate and secure the operation of aggregating the K-701 tractor with agricultural machines, it is necessary to introduce a device into the gearbox control that would allow drivers to smoothly adjust the pressure in the gearbox hydraulic system from 0 to the nominal operating pressure. Operational and technological laboratory and field tests of machine-tractor units (MTA) with the K-701 tractor on plowing and cultivation have shown: the quality of technological processes meets agrotechnical requirements. The use of the K-701 tractor in plowing provides an increase in labor productivity by 30 percent, in cultivation by 27-29 percent. Compared to the K-700 tractor, the specific fuel consumption is 11 and 7 percent higher, respectively.
Recommended: suspend production of K-701 tractors. Continue testing the K-701 tractor according to the program of the 2nd stage of testing, in the amount of 4,500 hours.
