We will revisit the very extensive seep region investigated on Dive S0745, in 2700+ meter water off Mocha Island to characterize the environments, water, fauna, sediments and rocks of seep features at this site. Evaluate habitat types and distribution, use by surrounding deep-sea biota including commercial fish, debris. Key visitation areas include the black bacterial mats, northern rocky regions.
Additional sites may be identified on M3 mapping (Nov. 1 evening). Please be on the lookout for evidence of seepage (bubbles, carbonates, microbial mats, clams, tube aggregations, nearby corals etc), interesting animal behavior and relationships, and use of the site by commercially harvested fish and invertebrates. Studies here could inform management of deeper waters.
